How to Join:

Once a year we accept candidates for our training program. We hold an information session in the late summer or early fall to discuss our course and interview candidates for the program. New members are then taken on as members in training for 3 months, during which we are able to work with them to see how they suit our program and how we work with them. This works like a trial basis, with a good chance to see the kinds of things we do and how we do them prior to taking the course.

After passing the MIT program with a minimum 50% attendance new recruits are evaluated and then invited to attend the Ground Search and Rescue course (GSAR), a 75 hour course done over three months. This course includes an introduction to all the different aspects of SAR including: Maps and navigation, Survival, Ropes, Swiftwater, Avalanche and all the different types of searches. The course also includes a mandatory overnighter, where we spend the night outside in shelters we build.

Once that course is complete, we invite those qualified to join our regular group and assist us in looking for lost people!

Another group we have is our auxiliary section, this is for those who wish to help us out but not as much in the field as others. These members are trained in the same way as our regular members, however they are not required to complete all the outdoor portions of the course. Auxiliary members fill an important role in the logistics of a search or rescue, doing things like transporting teams around their assignments, running the radios, equipping the teams before they go into the field, and many other important tasks that enable the searchers to do their portion of the task.
